Statistics Taster Day

Book now

The increase in digitally available data over the last decade has created a need for analytically able professionals who can handle and make sense of large sets of data. Statisticians are in ever-growing demand for their knowledge and skills, and can work in a wide and interesting range of areas, including technology, health, genetics, social science, the civil service and transport as well as the more traditional routes of insurance and finance.

Statistics at university is very different from that learned at school. It is far more mathematical, but also provides the opportunity to work with large datasets and use custom software to analyse data and produce results that can be used to better understand our world. This taster day explores some of the lesser-known areas of Statistics and the ways that it can be applied to many different fields.

The day will include two workshops given by members of the department exploring different areas of Statistics, lunch, information on the Oxford admissions process and an optional college tour.

Who is it for?
This event is open to Year 12 students studying Maths at A-level. Students should be on track to receive at least A*AA. Preference will be given to students at state maintained schools in the first instance, but independent schools are welcome to apply and will be accommodated subject to places being available.

When and where?
The next event will be on 20th March 2019, 10:00-15:15 at the Department of Statistics, 24-29 St Giles’, Oxford, OX1 3LB, and Mathematical Institute, OX2 6GG. There is also the opportunity to visit a college from 15:30.

The exact timetable will be confirmed nearer the time, but in the meantime you can see the timetable for the 2018 event: Statistics Taster Day Timetable 2018
